Q: What advice would you give students/students of color who aspire to work in the healthcare field?

A: Hard work always wins. The most important thing is the content of your thoughts and how prepared you are to take on opportunities. "Good luck" is when opportunity meets preparation and there are plenty of opportunities out there for everyone, put in the work upfront so that you are ready. Most barriers are in our heads. Focus on your goals and ignore the noise.

Q: Why did you decide to go into medicine?

A: I admired the knowledge medical providers have and the impact that medicine can have in so many people. Medicine has many sides that you can tap in to while practicing, including caring for patients, teaching students, residents, fellows, and the community, participate in hospital administration, research, industry, etc.

Q: Why is it important to have POC in healthcare of different backgrounds?

A: I believe talent comes in many shapes, colors, and forms. Different backgrounds bring different perspectives. Diversity of thought is very important, and I believe we can always learn a lot from people who are from different places in the world or that have had different life experiences and backgrounds. Patients also appreciate when for example the provider speaks the same language or perhaps understands the dynamics of the country where they came from or the hardships that their community endures.

A: I am from Venezuela.
